Join us Monday night, April 13 at 7:30 pm at Grace Church Van Vorst for our fourth general meeting of 2015.

With spring finally peeking its head out, this meeting will turn a bit toward neighborhood beautification efforts, as well as a preview of upcoming warm-weather social events later on this year. On the back end, there will be some neighborhood news, including topics such as SID expansion and the MGM redevelopment plan updates.

We encourage our neighbors to shop locally, and hope everyone supports the businesses that make living in Harsimus Cove even better. We’re pleased to note that Torico Homemade Ice Cream and Barcade have renewed their generous sponsorship of our association this year. We’re also happy to announce our new sponsors Dixon Advisory. If you have a neighborhood business and are interested in HCA sponsorship opportunities, please reach out to an HCA Board member.

Call to Duty: Cleaning up Harsimus Cove

Don’t like trash on your sidewalk or street? Well… there have been active discussions about reviving and revitalizing HCA’s litter patrol efforts for 2015. We have been looking into teaming up with adjacent neighborhoods like the Village and PAD to conduct a clean-up. However, HCA also wants to hear from you, our members! Do you have a great idea to help with the effort? Please feel free to share it on HCA’s Facebook group or come to our meeting and suggest it in person.

“Chain Stores” Ordinance & MGM Redevelopment Plan Amendment Both Pass Planning Board

The Jersey City Planning Board has approved two proposed changes at its April 7th meeting. The first would limit the amount of space in redevelopment plans to be occupied by chain stores to 30 percent. The second would amend the Morgan Grove Marin redevelopment plan to allow for a tower of up to 375 feet to be built on Marin between Bay and First Streets, contingent upon community benefits that include funding for affordable housing, open space in Harsimus Cove and/or improvements in streetscapes in the neighborhood.

Downtown SID to Expand

The Historic Downtown Special Improvement District is looking to expand its zone to include a larger portion of Newark Avenue (all the way west to the Turnpike overpass) as well as certain blocks connected in the Village, Van Vorst Park and Harsimus Cove. The Village Neighborhood Association has supported this expansion. In our neighborhood, the proposed expansion is limited to Erie, between Bay and First, and Bay Street, between Erie and Grove.
